Nature’s Tapestry

Activity

Weaving with Plants and Flowers

Weave a floral art piece to hang around campus or your room. What plants and flowers will you use? Try to identify each species and learn one fact about it! If you want, revisit your tapestry and notice how it has changed (drying, decay, predation, weather, etc.)

Science Seed

Floral weaving has a long and diverse history. Ancient cultures used flowers, grasses, and leaves to create items like baskets, mats, and ceremonial garlands. Indigenous peoples weave floral crowns and decorations for rituals and celebrations. In medieval Europe, flowers were woven into symbols for religious events or festivals. Different cultures often use specific flowers that hold special meanings. Floral weaving is not only a decorative activity, but also helps develop fine motor skills, creativity, and focus!

earn Badges

Badges can be earned through hands-on experiences within each of the 16 branches of science, or “Science Slices.” You can earn a badge in each branch of science by doing four activities in these categories. We also encourage participants to keep a Nature Journal to record their memories, and to express themselves creatively through writing or drawing after each activity. We recommend that each child (and parent if they’d like) write or draw in a journal after each activity, with expectations of your children that match their age (the goal is self-expression, not perfection).
