Color Match Walk

Activity

Pigments Shape the Colors of Nature

Go on a nature walk to observe colors. Pick colors from your shoes, backpack, clothes or anything else around you! Try to match three to five of your colors to something you find in nature.

Colors in plants and nature are determined by molecules called pigments. These pigments absorb certain colors of light and reflect others, giving objects their distinctive hues. For example, chlorophyll, which is responsible for the green color in plants, is crucial for photosynthesis, the process plants use to make food. Other pigments, like carotenoids (many yellows and oranges) and anthocyanins (many blues, reds and purples) contribute to the many colors we see in leaves, flowers, and fruits.

earn Badges

Badges can be earned through hands-on experiences within each of the 16 branches of science, or “Science Slices.” You can earn a badge in each branch of science by doing four activities in these categories. We also encourage participants to keep a Nature Journal to record their memories, and to express themselves creatively through writing or drawing after each activity. We recommend that each child (and parent if they’d like) write or draw in a journal after each activity, with expectations of your children that match their age (the goal is self-expression, not perfection).
