The Power of Weather to Shape Our World

Use natural materials to create a sculpture outside. Visit the sculpture after weather has changed it. How did it change? What changed it? How long did it take?

Science Seed

The elements of weather can affect rocks, soil, and structures, both man-made and natural. Wind, rain, ice, and sunlight can carve rock, change the shape landscapes and even move trees. Most change takes thousands if not millions of years for water or ice to carve rocks into beautiful formations. But sometimes rapid weather events such as storms or extremely high tides can quickly move an entire beach, or carry enormous rocks to a new location. Even a small pebble caught in a circular eddy of water in a river can carve out a big hole in a rock over a long period of time.

earn Badges

Badges can be earned through hands-on experiences within each of the 16 branches of science, or “Science Slices.” You can earn a badge in each branch of science by doing four activities in these categories. We also encourage participants to keep a Nature Journal to record their memories, and to express themselves creatively through writing or drawing after each activity. We recommend that each child (and parent if they’d like) write or draw in a journal after each activity, with expectations of your children that match their age (the goal is self-expression, not perfection).
