Telling Your Story Through Ancient Symbols

Create a cave painting (on paper or any other materials) to describe your life story, your family’s history, or an adventure you experienced. Use real symbols, such as these (https://bit.ly/2yi4rl4) or make up your own!

Science Seed

The oldest known cave painting is a red hand stencil painting in Spain that dates over 64,000 years old! Drawings of humans were actually rare in cave paintings. Instead, the most common themes were animals that were useful or connected to native people, such as bison, horses, and deer, as well as stencils of hands and geometric lines. Some cave paintings, such as the White Shaman in West Texas tell detailed stories and mark annual events such as the winter solstice.

earn Badges

Badges can be earned through hands-on experiences within each of the 16 branches of science, or “Science Slices.” You can earn a badge in each branch of science by doing four activities in these categories. We also encourage participants to keep a Nature Journal to record their memories, and to express themselves creatively through writing or drawing after each activity. We recommend that each child (and parent if they’d like) write or draw in a journal after each activity, with expectations of your children that match their age (the goal is self-expression, not perfection).
