Rewilding the City

Activity

Redesigning Urban Spaces for Nature and People

Find a place in your city that is not used often, such as an old parking lot. Draw a new use for this place to transform it into an urban nature space. You might include elements like seating, a shade structure, a natural playscape, community garden, native plant garden, wildlife garden, sensory garden, etc.

Science Seed

Cities throughout the world are starting to transform abandoned lots and vacant land into nature spaces. For densely populated cities without a lot of green space, these small nature spaces can provide relief for community members, especially in areas where access to parks is more difficult! Recreating these areas also helps boost biodiversity and provide more space for local wildlife. These urban ecosystems are not only a mood booster, but they can also help supply clean water, filter air, reduce heat, create recreation opportunities and help build communities!

earn Badges

Badges can be earned through hands-on experiences within each of the 16 branches of science, or “Science Slices.” You can earn a badge in each branch of science by doing four activities in these categories. We also encourage participants to keep a Nature Journal to record their memories, and to express themselves creatively through writing or drawing after each activity. We recommend that each child (and parent if they’d like) write or draw in a journal after each activity, with expectations of your children that match their age (the goal is self-expression, not perfection).
