Bird Buffet

Activity

What if You Had to Eat Like a Bird?

Calculate how many pounds of food you would have to consume based on your weight if you were a bird. How much of your favorite food is that? How many tacos or apples would you have to eat!?

Science Seed

The average bird eats around ½ to ¼ of their body weight each day, whereas most adult humans eat between 3 and 5 pounds of food each day. The amount of food a bird needs depends on many factors, including body size, amount of movement, and preferred diet. For example, hummingbirds have incredibly high metabolisms, and even though they feed on large amounts of high calorie nectar, they must eat every few hours to avoid starving! On the other hand, many birds of prey eat less often because their food sources have higher protein. They may even skip a day of eating!

earn Badges

Badges can be earned through hands-on experiences within each of the 16 branches of science, or “Science Slices.” You can earn a badge in each branch of science by doing four activities in these categories. We also encourage participants to keep a Nature Journal to record their memories, and to express themselves creatively through writing or drawing after each activity. We recommend that each child (and parent if they’d like) write or draw in a journal after each activity, with expectations of your children that match their age (the goal is self-expression, not perfection).
