Survival Mapping

Activity

Think Like an Animal!

Create your own ‘survival’ map, thinking like an animal! What resources do you need to survive? Where would you want to live? How does the geography of Palmer Elementary help you make your choices?

Geography refers to the physical features of an area, like the land, water, and climate, that influence where animals live. Terrain is the type of land, such as hills, flat fields, or forests, and it affects which plants and animals can survive in that area. For example, areas with open grassy fields provide space for animals to roam and find food, while trees and bushes offer shelter and protection. Water sources, like ponds or rainwater collected in low areas, are important for animals that need to drink or cool down. By creating your own survival map, you’ll explore how these features—landforms, water, and shelter—highlight places where animals can find the resources they need to survive.

earn Badges

Badges can be earned through hands-on experiences within each of the 16 branches of science, or “Science Slices.” You can earn a badge in each branch of science by doing four activities in these categories. We also encourage participants to keep a Nature Journal to record their memories, and to express themselves creatively through writing or drawing after each activity. We recommend that each child (and parent if they’d like) write or draw in a journal after each activity, with expectations of your children that match their age (the goal is self-expression, not perfection).
