How Do Fish Move?

Activity

Create Your Own Fish Flipbook!

Using scrap paper, create a booklet with at least four pages. Then, observe a fish and imagine how its body moves. How do the scales flash? What do the fins do? Draw one fish position, then change it slightly to draw the next on the second piece of paper. Complete your fish comic and flip the pages on the bottom right side using your thumb to see your drawings in action!

Science Seed

Flip books have a long history of showing movement through art. The first one, coined by John Barnes Linnett in 1863, was called a kineograph. This was the birth of animation. Soon, circular drums were developed to show a series of images so quickly that it looks more seamless to the human eye. In 1895, better cameras and projectors were available, and movies were born. These advancements projected light to make the image happen, while flipbooks are images directly on the paper.

earn Badges

Badges can be earned through hands-on experiences within each of the 16 branches of science, or “Science Slices.” You can earn a badge in each branch of science by doing four activities in these categories. We also encourage participants to keep a Nature Journal to record their memories, and to express themselves creatively through writing or drawing after each activity. We recommend that each child (and parent if they’d like) write or draw in a journal after each activity, with expectations of your children that match their age (the goal is self-expression, not perfection).
