Race Like a Rabbit!

Activity

Imagine You Are Escaping a Predator

Pretend you’re a rabbit and race through the green space behind your school! Take turns being the ‘predator,’ like a coyote or bobcat, while the rest of your group runs to safety like a rabbit, try to dodge the predator and any other obstacles!

Science Seed

Rabbits can be seen hopping through grassy areas or darting around the school’s playground using their sharp reflexes to escape predators. A rabbit’s powerful hind legs give them the ability to make quick, high jumps to navigate around obstacles like bushes or trees or avoid predators, while their smaller front legs help them steer and change direction quickly. They also rely on their sharp senses, especially their large ears, to detect sounds from all directions, alerting them to nearby dangers such as coyotes or hawks. Their excellent peripheral (side) vision helps them spot movement while staying low to the ground, allowing them to race through the grass and quickly seek shelter in the shrubs or under trees when they sense danger.

earn Badges

Badges can be earned through hands-on experiences within each of the 16 branches of science, or “Science Slices.” You can earn a badge in each branch of science by doing four activities in these categories. We also encourage participants to keep a Nature Journal to record their memories, and to express themselves creatively through writing or drawing after each activity. We recommend that each child (and parent if they’d like) write or draw in a journal after each activity, with expectations of your children that match their age (the goal is self-expression, not perfection).
