Journey Through Time

Activity

Walk Through Human History

Walk in the footsteps of human history as you wander the path down from the Kinder Land Bridge. As you walk, read the historical markers along the trail, starting at 12,000 BCE, and imagine what you would see you if you were living during that time period.

Science Seed

Around 12,000 BCE, the last Ice Age ended and early humans arrived in the area, occupying the Texas Coastal Prairie. By 10,000 BCE, Native peoples developed sophisticated hunting tools to hunt animals like woolly mammoth, saber-toothed cats, giant deer, and dire wolves. The land remained an important crossroads for indigenous groups until the 1900s, when it became Camp Logan, a military training base during World War I. In 1924, thanks to Ima Hogg and civic leaders, the former military camp was preserved as Memorial Park, and today, with additions like the Kinder Land Bridge, it continues to tell the story of how humans and nature shape each other over thousands of years.

earn Badges

Badges can be earned through hands-on experiences within each of the 16 branches of science, or “Science Slices.” You can earn a badge in each branch of science by doing four activities in these categories. We also encourage participants to keep a Nature Journal to record their memories, and to express themselves creatively through writing or drawing after each activity. We recommend that each child (and parent if they’d like) write or draw in a journal after each activity, with expectations of your children that match their age (the goal is self-expression, not perfection).
