Voices of the Park

Activity

A Cultural Soundscape

As you explore the Park listen for different languages. Go on a language scavenger hunt and identify as many languages as you can. How many languages do you speak? How many languages does your class, or group with you today speak?

Science Seed

Did you know that roughly 6,500 languages are spoken around the world today? The top three languages of native speakers are English, Mandarin, and Hindi. In Papua New Guinea alone, there are 840 spoken living languages! Here in Houston, one of the most diverse cities in the U.S., 145 different languages are spoken, and more than 48% of Houstonians speak a language other than English at home. With nine major languages commonly spoken in the city, Houston is America’s most linguistically diverse city. Which languages do you think are growing the fastest? What languages would you like to learn?

earn Badges

Badges can be earned through hands-on experiences within each of the 16 branches of science, or “Science Slices.” You can earn a badge in each branch of science by doing four activities in these categories. We also encourage participants to keep a Nature Journal to record their memories, and to express themselves creatively through writing or drawing after each activity. We recommend that each child (and parent if they’d like) write or draw in a journal after each activity, with expectations of your children that match their age (the goal is self-expression, not perfection).
