Chasing the Sunset

Activity

Colors of the Sky

Find a spot with a clear view of the western sky and watch the sunset. Clay Family Eastern Glades is a great choice! Notice the colors as they change from yellow to orange, pink, or purple. Can you spot where the colors are the brightest? How might the colors might look different on a cloudy or rainy day?

Science Seed

At sunset, sunlight travels a longer path through the atmosphere, which causes more of the shorter blue and violet light waves to scatter out of view, leaving behind warm colors like red, orange, and pink. Dust, moisture, and clouds in the air can make these colors even more intense or create new shades as they reflect and scatter the light. Every sunset is unique because of these changing conditions, and it’s a natural example of how light interacts with the atmosphere.

earn Badges

Badges can be earned through hands-on experiences within each of the 16 branches of science, or “Science Slices.” You can earn a badge in each branch of science by doing four activities in these categories. We also encourage participants to keep a Nature Journal to record their memories, and to express themselves creatively through writing or drawing after each activity. We recommend that each child (and parent if they’d like) write or draw in a journal after each activity, with expectations of your children that match their age (the goal is self-expression, not perfection).
