Lunar Light

Activity

A Full Moon Exploration

Take a night walk during a full moon and observe the moon’s features. If you can, photograph the moon to capture its beauty! For a fun challenge, turn off your flashlight for 30 seconds to see how well the moonlight illuminates your path. (Remember to stay safe in the Park at night.)

Science Seed

Did you know Houston is known as “Space City?” NASA’s Johnson Space Center, right here in Houston, controlled the historic 1969 Apollo 11 mission when Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin landed the Lunar Module, “Eagle,” on the moon. Houston remains a hub for space exploration, with astronaut training, mission control, and astronomical research happening at Space Center Houston. As you look up at the moon, think about the amazing journeys it has inspired and how scientists continue to study it!

earn Badges

Badges can be earned through hands-on experiences within each of the 16 branches of science, or “Science Slices.” You can earn a badge in each branch of science by doing four activities in these categories. We also encourage participants to keep a Nature Journal to record their memories, and to express themselves creatively through writing or drawing after each activity. We recommend that each child (and parent if they’d like) write or draw in a journal after each activity, with expectations of your children that match their age (the goal is self-expression, not perfection).
