BioCycle in Action

See if you can spot the areas where the Park’s BioCycle program has worked its magic! As you walk through the park, look for areas where fresh mulch or compost is used—such as in garden beds, along pathways, or around trees. This mulch came from the Park’s BioCycle program, made right here in the Park from recycled tree trimmings and waste. Take a close look and think about how this natural material helps the plants and keeps the soil healthy. Touch the mulch and describe how it feels, how it smells, how it looks.

Science Seed

The BioCycle program at Memorial Park helps recycle tree waste into compost and mulch. This reduces waste and provides natural materials that help plants grow. The compost improves the soil, and the mulch keeps the soil moist, helping the Park stay healthy, even during dry weather. This program supports the environment by recycling organic material and making the Park more sustainable, while also teaching the community about protecting nature and fighting climate change. Do you use compost or mulch where you live or go to school?

earn Badges

Badges can be earned through hands-on experiences within each of the 16 branches of science, or “Science Slices.” You can earn a badge in each branch of science by doing four activities in these categories. We also encourage participants to keep a Nature Journal to record their memories, and to express themselves creatively through writing or drawing after each activity. We recommend that each child (and parent if they’d like) write or draw in a journal after each activity, with expectations of your children that match their age (the goal is self-expression, not perfection).
