Habitat Highlights

As you’re exploring the Park, identify three different types of habitats. How are they different? How are they similar to one another? Are there any plants or animals that you see across multiple habitats? Draw, write about, or orally describe one of the habitats, including the abiotic (non-living) parts and the living species in it.

Science Seed

A habitat is a natural home for plants and animals, consisting of features that support life. Each habitat, like the prairie, forest, and pond, has unique characteristics that provide food, water, and shelter for its inhabitants. Some ecosystems you may see in the Park include Gulf Coast prairie, savannah, Pineywoods and hardwood forests. Prairies are open grasslands with grasses and wildflowers; Forests are dense areas filled with trees; Ponds are small bodies of water that support aquatic life, Savannahs are grassy areas scattered with trees.

earn Badges

Badges can be earned through hands-on experiences within each of the 16 branches of science, or “Science Slices.” You can earn a badge in each branch of science by doing four activities in these categories. We also encourage participants to keep a Nature Journal to record their memories, and to express themselves creatively through writing or drawing after each activity. We recommend that each child (and parent if they’d like) write or draw in a journal after each activity, with expectations of your children that match their age (the goal is self-expression, not perfection).
