Howl and Seek

Activity

Coyote Calls

Sit or stand in a circle and close your eyes. Start with one person and have them do their best coyote howl. After five seconds, open your eyes and guess who made the howl. Take turns making different howls, each person adding their unique twist. Try to guess which person makes each call! Science Seed

Coyotes are important for maintaining a balanced ecosystem in Memorial Park. As predators, they control populations of small mammals, preventing overgrazing and helping plants thrive. They also scavenge, cleaning up dead animals and reducing the spread of disease. Coyotes use howls to communicate with each other, and just like us, they can tell each other apart by the unique sound of their calls. A coyote’s howl typically starts with a low pitch, rises higher, and may end with yips. These variations in pitch and rhythm help other coyotes identify who is calling, whether it’s a member of their pack or another coyote nearby. By listening closely, coyotes can communicate their location, find their pups, warn of danger, or signal that it’s time to gather the pack.

earn Badges

Badges can be earned through hands-on experiences within each of the 16 branches of science, or “Science Slices.” You can earn a badge in each branch of science by doing four activities in these categories. We also encourage participants to keep a Nature Journal to record their memories, and to express themselves creatively through writing or drawing after each activity. We recommend that each child (and parent if they’d like) write or draw in a journal after each activity, with expectations of your children that match their age (the goal is self-expression, not perfection).
