Recycled Art

Activity

Reduce, Reuse, Recycle

Talk about where recycling containers are located in your classrooms and cafeteria. Do students usually use them? How can we encourage more recycling? Gather recycled materials (with assistance if needed) and use them to create a piece of art. Think about how to reduce waste, reuse items, and recycle creatively.

Science Seed

Human trash is one of the biggest threats to marine life because it washes from our streets to our creeks to rivers and then into the ocean. Upcycled art is created by reusing materials that would have otherwise ended up in the trash. Upcycled art helps conserve natural resources, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, prevent pollution, and is a great way to express yourself!

earn Badges

Badges can be earned through hands-on experiences within each of the 16 branches of science, or “Science Slices.” You can earn a badge in each branch of science by doing four activities in these categories. We also encourage participants to keep a Nature Journal to record their memories, and to express themselves creatively through writing or drawing after each activity. We recommend that each child (and parent if they’d like) write or draw in a journal after each activity, with expectations of your children that match their age (the goal is self-expression, not perfection).
