Hills to Bridges

Activity

Learning Through Landscapes

Walk around the Park and look for different types of landmarks: hills, rivers, lakes, bridges, or even structures like statues and buildings. How do different landmarks help us navigate and understand the geography of an area? For example, what do the geographic features of Houston tell us?

Landmarks help us understand the geography of a place and make it easier to find our way. In Memorial Park, features like hills, bridges, and lakes are key markers that tell us about the land’s shape and how people have used it. Rivers and lakes show how water moves through the landscape, while structures like statues and buildings tell us about human activity and history in the area. In a big city like Houston, landmarks help us navigate by showing us the natural and man-made features that define the city’s layout.

earn Badges

Badges can be earned through hands-on experiences within each of the 16 branches of science, or “Science Slices.” You can earn a badge in each branch of science by doing four activities in these categories. We also encourage participants to keep a Nature Journal to record their memories, and to express themselves creatively through writing or drawing after each activity. We recommend that each child (and parent if they’d like) write or draw in a journal after each activity, with expectations of your children that match their age (the goal is self-expression, not perfection).
